Mary Seatonabout this book: My book Tales from the Sand Hills is a book of short stories. It is an autobiography about my life growing up in the outback of Australia. It follows my adventures as I travelled the length and breadth of this country with my father, a returned war vet, who was then a rabbit trapper. We lived most of the time in a caravan spending a little time in a tent and also in a house from time to time.
As the name suggests, mostly we inhabited the Sandhill country in the red heart of the country. I wanted to write this book as I thought it would be a unique look into the lives of some different Australians. And so before the oil drillers, before the big mining companies and even before decent roads or highways, these old diggers forged their way into the hot arid and sometimes hostile desert to eke out an existence catching rabbits. And with them they took their families.
They had to be hard tough men with a will of iron to meet the everyday challenges of that harsh country in those days. And their wives, our mothers, had to be the same and more. They had to be nurse, doctor, teacher, councillor and even priest and they had to endure.
The stories you will read between these pages are to my knowledge, true and correct, but of course in some I was very young. They are for the most part humorous, with some sadness and much excitement. The facts are the facts. I feel proud and privileged to have been a part of these pioneers and I would not change my life for anyone's. Well…
