Merry Jonesabout this book: Harper Jennings is a female Iraq war vet, now studying archeology at Cornell, married to Hank Jennings, a geologist. Her life is fine until, one day, while repairing the roof of their home, Hank falls and sustains brain damage.
Harper brings him to a prestigious local neurological center for treatment. Meantime, she teaches a summer school introductory section of archeology. One day, as she's about to give a quiz, a student jumps out the classroom window.
From there, Harper's life turns upside down. Her PTSD flares up. Her husband is learning to talk again. But more of her students are dying or acting strangely. A doctor at the neurology center becomes more interested in her than in his patient, her husband. Some of her students are volunteering as subjects in drug trials at the neurology center. And one of her students seems to suffer narcolepsy, for which she is treated by the same doctors as Harper's husband.
Something sinister seems to be going on at the neurology center. Will Harper be able to figure out what it is in time to save her students--And her husband?
Readers of this bio-thriller will be thriller lovers, mystery lovers, people who like strong women characters and lots of suspense.
To write this, I had to learn a lot about PTSD, brain injuries, aphasia, sleep disorders and drug trials--not to mention the war in Iraq and what it was like to be a woman serving there.
The cover was designed by the publisher, and I think it's strong. During the course of writing Summer Session, I became very attached to Harper and her husband Hank, and I hope to stay with them for a while, writing lots of books in the series.
