"Johnny lived in a big, red, brick building on a sunny, tree-lined street in the big city of Boston.
Every day, Johnny woke up, ate his breakfast, brushed his teeth, and went to preschool with Mom.
He loved to play with all of the other three-year-olds who lived on his block.
But no matter what he did, Johnny always had his pacifier."

Three-year-old Johnny was still sucking away on a pacifier even after many of his friends had given up their pacifiers. His mom had tried to get him to quit, but the lad was adamant about keeping the pacifier. Finally, in desperation, his mom came up with an ingenious plan that would make Johnny actually want to give it up. The plan was so successful that many other kids turned in their pacifiers too.
Getting kids to quit sucking on their pacifiers is a problem that's been around as long as pacifiers have been in use, dating back at least to the 17th century. The use of pacifiers with children older than one year is somewhat controversial, with some children's health professionals claiming benefits, while others claim drawbacks.
As bedtime reading, "The Pacifier Tree" is entertaining enough with its simple storyline and colorful illustrations, and kids just might get the message about giving up their pacifiers for a greater good. But parents should be prepared to start working on a treehouse if they do!
