Lily Ennisabout this book: Blue Rider is the book I had in me since I was a teen studying art history. I have always believed artists live more interesting lives than the rest of us. They are brave enough to follow their heart.
Blue Rider follows some characters from my previous novel, the historical romance Scarlet Runner. World War 1 is the background setting but the story takes place predominantly in Paris and Moscow following the protagonist's interactions with the painters of the day. Naturally Mary falls in love with one or two of them.
Mary's brother joined the New Zealand infantry and saw many battles on the Western Front. This provides a second important strand throughout the book.
Back at home Mary's great grand-daughter discovers a suitcase full of paintings when her grandmother dies. This leads her to embark on a journey to discover the great grandmother she didn't know and to discover a surprising truth.
Blue Rider took me longer to research than any other book. I had to make sure that the connections between painters were legitimate. Along the way I fell in love with painters I had little knowledge of.
