Christopher Angelabout this book: The Mona Lisa Speaks was inspired by my own visit to the Louvre. As I stood there amongst the crowd, I wondered why this painting, amongst all the great paintings in the Louvre, had become so famous. I went back to my hotel, and searched for this very question on Google. And I found an interesting answer. I did not know that the Mona Lisa had been stolen in 1911, and in fact went missing for two years. The more I read about this theft, the more interested I became in the Mona Lisa's story. And because the thief, an Italian craftsman named Vicenzo Peruggia, who was hired by the Louvre to build a protective case for the Mona Lisa, never said exactly why he did it, and what he did for those two long years he had custody of the Mona Lisa, my imagination started to fill in the blanks. I felt, that in order to fully speculate, and also to tackle questions that I found interesting, such as 'why do we feel we must see the actual painting, rather than a copy, even in this age of perfect digital copies,' that I had to update the story to modern day Paris.
I hope the result is both a love letter to Paris, and an entertaining art heist story. I have certainly enjoyed writing this novel, and thinking about how I would go about stealing the world's most famous painting.
