Carolyn P. Schriberabout this book: This is the fifth book in my series, "The Civil War in South Carolina's Low Country, but it differs from the other volumes in a couple of ways. First, it is completely fictional, although I used my knowledge of some historical families to keep my characters lifelike and believable. Second, its two main characters represent the differences between Northerners and Southerners. In my other books I tried to be fair to both sides; in this one I pit the two directly against one another.
The Grenville family's journey takes them from Charleston to Aiken, South Carolina, as they try to outrun the effects of the war. Their efforts, however, only manage to dump them into the center of the conflict. They must deal with such things as their opposing views of slavery and the very real, but little understood, long term effects of the war experience. Readers will find their ideas about freedom challenged and their understanding of PTSD expanded.
