Book Review: Pursuing Gold - A Novel of the Civil War by Cynthia L Simmonscategories: Book, History of Money, Banking, Herbal Medications, Chattanooga, Railroads, American Civil War
Cynthia L Simmonsabout this book: This is a fantastic novel about a Confederate bank trying to stay afloat in the midst of war and counterfeit money. The action takes place in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a railroad town, which the Union targets to conquer the South. Mary Beth and Peter, the two main characters must also face impossible family issues while trying to decide if they are right for each other. You'll learn a lot about gold and finance while solving the mystery.
I grew up in the suburbs of Chattanooga and came to love the Civil War era. I thought everyone climbed on cannons and gazed at crumbling Confederate uniforms. Later, I married a CPA and developed an interested in banking. Add to that about four to five years of research on everything from the 1860s, and then I penned the book. Since I was trained as an RN, I enjoyed researching Civil War medicine and herbal remedies of the day. I've had many great comments historical accuracy.

Great charactersI enjoyed this historical novel. The characters and story are engaging. I learned some things about the Civil War as I read, and I was caught up in the murder mystery as well as the struggles and conflicts facing the protagonists, Mary Beth and Peter. I hope there will be a sequel! [by Jennie S]
