Nick K. Adamsabout this book: Sometimes reading history can be very personal. That's the case with "My Dear Wife and Children," for this is not a history of the Civil War, but the reflections of a common soldier written in 100 letters back to the wife and children he left on their Minnesota prairie homestead while he fought to maintain the Union. Drill, marching, battles, waiting, daily life, and most of all trying to stay connected to his family--it's all there!
I used the letters for many years to introduce my students to the American Civil War from the inside. After a careful transcription from the originals, and adding numerous historical footnotes, maps, and introductory materials, the 100 letters have now been published.
The writer's death at the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863 left only these letters as a legacy to his children and their generations. But with their publication, they are now available for you to gain a richer perspective on the first two years of that conflict.
