Book: Riding the Shortwaves - Exploring the Magic of Amateur Radio by Don Keithcategories: Book, Ham Radio, Hacker, Maker, Weather Spotting, Emergency Communications, N4Kc, Satellites, Antennas, Broadcasting, Cellular, Electronics, Amateur Radio
Don Keithabout this book: The hobby of Amateur Radio just turned 100 years old yet it is--despite what many believe--just as relevant and viable as it was when early "hams" invented radio broadcasting. With interest in such pastimes as the "maker" and "hacker" movements, amateur radio has found a whole new level of interest.
I am a best-selling and award-winning author with more than two-dozen books to my credit, but I am also a licensed Amateur Radio operator with the call sign N4KC. I got my license when I was 13 years old and it led directly to a long career in broadcasting and advertising. I felt it was time to do a unique book on the hobby. Ham radio can do the same for young people today as it did for me, helping them to prepare for careers not only in communications but electronics, computers, engineering, cellular technology, and more.
But the hobby is also fun! It fits nicely with other pursuits such as model building, camping and hiking, RVing, scouting, weather spotting, emergency communications, and many more. Many enjoy talking with other hams all over the globe, locating hidden transmitters during "fox hunts," or competing in fast-paced and challenging "radio-sport" events. Hams today are on the forefront of digital communications and satellites. They can talk to astronauts in the International Space Station or through one of many Amateur Radio satellites orbiting the earth right now.
This book is for three different kinds of readers: those who might be considering becoming Amateur Radio operators, those who have already gotten their licenses and are not sure what they want to do in the hobby, and those who may have been licensed for a while and have either lost the spark or are looking for new things to do. I present this information in an easy-to-understand and fun way, including several funny or moving short stories that illustrate the appeal of ham radio...the hobby that not only led to my career but has given me so much fun, excitement and pleasure for more than 50 years.
