Mariam Cheshireabout this book: "The Alternate Safe World of Sanctuary" began as a letter to the Editor. Then it grew into a short story. After rewriting many times, the book emerged.
I was angry about people taking advantage of our social system - drive the Cadillac up to the church to get house rent money, to an Aid society for utility money, to generous people for food -- all under several names.
Sanctuary grew into a refuge for anyone who needed help. John Doe could enter without question and leave without question. He could get medical attention, schooling, training, and/or retire to safety. There were rules, of course, and there were those who tried to take advantage of the rules.
Evangeline entered the walled city in the Arizona desert, not knowing what to expect. In her search for her son, she had to fight the Underground.
We go back to 1972 and live in a time that is no longer here.
