Al Spragueabout this book: The Clear Blue Line is about three friends who enjoy free diving off the coast of Panama. They enjoy life to the fullest, looking for treasure, fighting off sharks, and loving the women in their lives.
I wrote this book because I wanted to record all of my exciting adventures and diving experiences in a fictitious tale. This was the most exciting period of my life. I hope it will entertain readers and provide an enjoyable escape from reality. And while I know it will appeal to other divers, I hope it will also appeal to anyone interested in exciting adventures.
When I was younger, I used to always look for the clear blue line on the horizon because that meant clear water for clear diving. I rarely found it. But I knew it was the right title for this story.
The cover is a painting I made for my deceased friend Jerry Coffey, who this book is dedicated to. Paul Delsey, one of the main characters, is based on Jerry's life.
For me, the hardest part was writing the romantic scenes. Guess I'm a little like my characters, dealing with sharks was much easier than writing about romance.
Fortunately, I didn't have to do any research. I lived my book. But I did learn a lot from writing it. My editor, Lorraine Fico-White and my publisher, Michele Orwin taught me a lot about fiction writing—that I didn't have to stick to my reality of what happened in my life. I could go further and use my imagination.
I hope readers will enjoy my book and get a sense of what it was like to be a diver and live in Panama back in the 1970s. It's an adventure I wanted to share.
