Michael Matsonabout this book: Perhaps the greatest gift a parent or grandparent can give a child is the self confidence to reach for the stars.
Bareback Rider is the tale of such a gift to a 12-year old girl. By telling her own story of fantastic adventures, Margaret Duggan shows Galen, her great granddaughter, that – if you really want to achieve your dreams, you can do it.
How the story came about: There was a story in our family that my own grandmother was a circus performer with a traveling company that came to a small Montana town. She met my grandfather there and when the circus moved on, she stayed, married and had five children. The story – possibly true, possibly not – always fascinated me and I decided to turn it into a tale to entertain and inspire children.
The writing of Bareback Rider came easily although it did require some time spent researching historical facts and locations. These are as accurate as I could make them and I think make the tale more interesting. The cover of a young girl, a horse and a wolf (wolves figure prominently in the story) seemed a logical solution. It was done by an artist who prefers to remain anonymous.
