Larry Yokeabout this book: A boy from the heartland, growing up in a large family, has a hard time relating to his father. A father who works long hours to feed and care for his big brood. This story of coming of age in middle America is a story of many families right after World War II. Money is tight and material things difficult to get.
Still, his family is a caring one, and they support each other. Hunter still feels like the odd man out. On the fringe and not able to blend in with his brothers and sisters. While they still live in the country, things are rough but there is enough to keep Hunter occupied most of the time.
Then comes the move to town. This upsets the boy's balance and things get worse. An incident that results in a terrific beating from his father puts the wedge between father and deeper yet. His father's death makes life more difficult for the family. Hunter falls in with the wrong people. Drugs and easy money pull Hunter far from the ideals he grew up with.
Where there are drugs, violence isn't far behind. A robbery costs Hunter the woman he loves. Can he get a second chance? Is there any way to change things?
