Carolyn Wilhelmabout this book: Airplane day is the day our family celebrates the arrival of our adopted child. Some people call this "gotcha day" or "adoption day." We adopted a baby girl from Korea in 1981. As an otherwise white family, our currently two-year-old grandson seems to wonder about Auntie's appearance. I thought a children's picture book could help answer his questions, so I wrote this book. It is an easy-reader with child appropriate vocabulary to help convey the story in simple terms. The illustrations really help tell the story as in any picture book. Perhaps this story might help other families, as well. There are few adoption stories where the adopted person is an adult and not a baby.
• "Sometimes the idea for a great diverse picture book for kids comes from the more genuine and authentic sources. That is exactly the case with Alex Asks About Auntie's Airplane Day by Carolyn Wilhelm."
— From Multicultural Children's Book Day Blog
• "Alex and his parents are on their way to an Airplane Day celebration, but Alex is confused because once they reach their destination, it isn't the airport, and Alex hasn't even seen an airplane!"
— From Castleview Academy in the UK
