Ken Montroseabout this book: Hauling it to the Curb describes the process of early recovery. I use the analogy of a house where the owner maintains the facade, but fills the inside with garbage due to addiction. When the drug abuse stops, the house is still filled with garbage. The owner can either let it rot away, and be miserable. Or, he can haul it to the curb, i.e. work a program of recovery.
Hauling it to the Curb was written by someone who's been there.
The last time I had a drink I was $35,000 in debt, I had just gotten kicked out of my Ph.D. program, my divorce was a month from being final, and I had no furniture. The night before I had hit a county sheriff while making an illegal left turn at 3:00 a.m.
Hauling it to the Curb walks the reader through the various forms of denial:
-Haves -- 'I have a job, car, house, spouse - that proves I'm not an addict.'
-Worsers -- 'He's much worse off than I am. He injects his drug, I only smoke mine.'
-Gonnas into Gottas -- 'I'm only gonna drink a couple 'cause I gotta stop shaking.'
It outlines ways to work the first five steps of Twelve Step programs, and the importance of gratitude. Hauling describes how Twelve Step slogans can be applied to everyday life.
Within the text is a novella that tells the story of Matt and Rachel, a couple struggling with their addictions. Matt knows he has a problem. Rachel is convinced Matt's sobriety is the real problem.
