Juanita Tischendorfabout this book: First released as "Who Says I'm Small" in 2005, Over My Head tells the story of raising a child who had special needs. This is a true story about my son who was born in 1969, before there were shows on television to introduce and smooth the path for dwarfs. It was also long before the doctors knew what to expect in children who suffered from dwarfism. What medical problems could surface now and in the future. It wasn't an easy parental situation then. There was nowhere to turn to find out about simple things like, "do I lower the clothes rack in his room or should I teach him methods that would help him in the world he entered. Erik was an achondroplasia dwarf which is considered to be the most prominent type of dwarfism, but even then there was not much to be found on raising my child. This book was my attempt to educate the world on dwarfism and how to be successful in raising your child if they were a dwarf. That and the fact that in those days, being black was looked upon as a 'handicap', made it hard to find the best way to raise my child. Somehow I did succeed, but it had to do with this changing world.
I hope this book aspires mothers and fathers of children who suffer from a handicap or special need. I want to let them know that each of us must find our way and whatever we do, as long as its with the best interest of our child, it is the right thing to do.
