Mary Maxieabout this book: The author, like most of the world, was glued to the TV, watching the horror of the events of September 11, 2000 as they unfolded. I was moved to write the 26 stories here, while watching, and I finished the book in about 48 hours, although it wasan't submitted for publication until ten years later, after I had begun my new career as an author.
The stories are fictional. I leave the actual stories to the mainstream media. What I try to show are feelings of people affected by horror, the everyday people affected, but whose stories are never told. They are composites, whose feelings and actions come out of my fertile mind, but who could be anyone who was waiting at home, at work, on holiday, travelling, or whatever, who was caught up waiting for something to happen that was triggered by the terrorists. Some of the stories intersect with each other, and some stand alone. I tried to show the sights, smells, sounds and fears of the 26 people here.
Why 26? Each person represents a letter of the alphabet, sort of a whole spectrum of humanity.
The cover is red, showing fear, anger, fire, danger, blood and hope.
