Music Review: Great Recordings Of The Century - Janet Baker Sings Mahler, Barbirolli
|5 stars, 1 review|
Creator: Gustav Mahler, John Barbirolli, Hallé Orchestra
Label: EMI Classics
Indeed Dame Janet ForeverWith this wonderful lady I've been deeper into the heart of Mahler but more particular my beloved Schubert than practically with any other singer with the possible exception of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and I know she won't mind me saying this.
After seeing her perform lieder at the Sydney Opera House with Geoffrey Parsons in the early eighties and reading her book, she taught me the importance of the validity of a live performance over recorded music, which is, after all, a moment frozen in time. It is greatly appreciated however, that we can listen to that moment in time however differently it might be interpreted at another recital.
