Music Review: Schubert - Goethe Lieder performed by Wolfgang Holzmair (baritone), Gerard Wyss (piano)
|5 stars, 1 review|
Creator: Schubert, Wolfgang Holzmair (baritone), Gerard Wyss (piano)
Holzmair and Wyss In Schubert's Goethe LiederThe Austrian baritone's superb verbal and musicianly skills, ably backed by Wyss's sensitive playing, draw the listener into a strange and distant world where a mysterious river-lady draws fisherman to a watery doom, a wandering harper laments his loneliness and pain, a knight in love gallops through the darkness to a midnight assignation, and so on. This richly rewarding disc is full of the ambivalence that is central to great art, but that is apt to wither under detailed explanation.
