Deryn Pittarabout this book: This novella is my first Young Adult. I set it in the Bay of Plenty, where I live, and enjoyed introducing features of the area, including two Taniwha (pronounced Tanny-far) These are creatures from Maori mythology who live in or near water. I have endowed my two Taniwha with magical talents.
The lead characters in the story are twin brothers who have inherited from their parents and grandparents unique talents of their own. Jason has the ability to hear gem stones singing and Levi can taste the presence of precious metals.
Their propspecting trip around the Bayof Plenty brings them in contact with a couple of villans and their occasional metings with these unlikable types builds the suspense of the story.
Add to the mix a pretty young cub reporter and you have a hint of romance.
Suitable for ages 10 - 15 this story has all the elements to hold a youngster's interest.
I enjoyed creating these characters and am considering writing a sequel. Perhaps taking then to the South Island of New Zealand to hunt for pounamu (green jade. I suspect there could be taniwha down there too!
