Jo Hoabout this book: In my normal career as a professional screenwriter, I always have to create with a particular audience in mind but this story, these characters didn't fit into the usual relationship mold. It isn't about two teenagers who fall in love, or a grown man who meets the woman of his dreams. Instead, it is about three lost souls, all in desperate need of love, coming together to form a family.
I have always believed that audiences and readers want stories and characters that they can relate to, that they care about. It doesn't matter what time period or what planet the characters come from, ultimately, it is how human they are and the problems they face, that draw us into the story.
Unfortunately, I have also always been as stubborn as my lead character, Chase. I refused to listen to the "experts", the agents and industry people who warned that readers would not be able to connect to a story that starred a teenager, a thirty-something guy, and a super intelligent dog coming together. That YA books ONLY had teenagers in, and that I would alienate readers by having an adult character.
Then again, I also refused to listen a few years ago when everyone told me that my television show, a martial arts fantasy for the BBC Children's channel would never been made as I was a brand new and untested writer, that it was far too expensive, and starred a mostly Asian cast – well, that show did get made and launched the careers of several actors, including Jessica Henwick who went on to feature in Game of Thrones, Star Wars: The Force Awakes and will be starring in the new Marvel/Netflix show, Iron Fist.
And so I wrote this book and published it myself. And I'm so glad I didn't listen to the "experts" as I am already receiving glowing reviews and fanmail from readers ranging from 15 to 70 years old! Hopefully, you will pick up this book and see for yourself. And if you do like it, please review so everyone else can know how wrong the "experts" can be sometimes.
