Wendy Storerabout this book: Ruby's alcoholic, lying, cheating dad might have disppeared from her life, but his shadow still hangs over her life. When Mum attampts to make contact with him, it is more than Ruby can stand. She abandons her baby sister, throws a rock through a shop window and ends up in hospital, refusing to talk.
She is sent away to High Fell Hall, a special school where she is supposed to get help, except that all the other girls in the school have problems of their own.
When Ruby meets Pearl, silence is not an option. Pearl's problems are too big to ignore, and their meeting will change their lives forever.
I was inspired to write this book when I worked in a special school, just like High Fell Hall. The children there were amazing and had such strong personalities, but they carried their troubles around with them, and these problems just infected everything they did. I wanted to write a story about how it is possible to let go of the past and move on... but Where Bluebirds Fly developed a momentum of its own and even I was surprised by the ending!
