Eva Pohlerabout this book: Therese Mills is riding home with her parents from her mother's award ceremony when bullets strike and their car plunges into Huck Finn Pond. Her mother is shot in the neck and unable to move. Her father is trapped beneath the steering column. She struggles to get them out as she watches them drown. Then darkness overtakes her.
When she finds herself on the bank of another body of water, she can't tell whether she's dreaming or dead. Used to manipulating her dreams, she entertains herself until a cute boy appears, full of compliments, saying he's never seen someone so powerful. Therese, powerful? He says he's Hypnos, the god of sleep. While fighting off his advances, Therese notices her parents boarding a raft. She flies through the air directly to them, where Hypnos's twin, Thanatos, warns her off. Still sure she's dreaming, she throws her arms around him, hoping to stay with her parents. This one act of affection toward the god of death changes his life forever.
Therese awakes from her coma and a few weeks later meets a boy named Than, the new horse handler at her best friend's ranch.
