Frank Hoferabout this book: James and I started Duck Blood Soup when the second Harry Potter book was really big. I always felt that Hermione Granger should have been the real hero of the Harry Potter series. To me, she just seemed to be a much more interesting character than Harry Potter. With that in mind Jeunelux, a farm girl who is one of the main characters was born. I wanted some strong, independent female characters, and she was the first. Other important female characters include a head of state, an army general, and women in combat situations.
The title Duck Blood Soup comes from a dish served at a state banquet in one of the early chapters. When I meet someone from a different culture, the conversation always turns to food. I've found unique and interesting food to be a way to build bridges and friendships and I wanted to bring that concept to one of the cultures we introduce in the book.
We didn't want mustache-twirling bad guys but instead tried to humanize the antagonists. We wanted to have characters that are neither invincible nor untiring. James and I also wanted introduce new races of creatures or give some classics different aspects than what you would find in other fantasy novels. We also replaced swords with firearms, airships, and railroads to further differentiates Duck Blood Soup from other fantasy novels.
We originally wrote Duck Blood Soup for teen readers but adults have also told us how much they enjoy the book. We've even had a couple people ask us when we would have a sequel ready.
