Veronica Helen Hart about this book: Elena is the story of a young girl living in Leningrad during the Seige by the Germans in WWII. The book was inspired by a story I heard many years ago about a family who walked to Germany to avoid starvation. Remarkably they survived not only a bitter winter in a German encampment, time in a concentration camp, but also the threat of being repatriated to Russia following the war.
Even though I'd heard the original story, during my research I changed many of the details to come up with Elena Federova, a young pianist who carries her fabric piano throughout their journey. She also carries a vision of a young girl in blue playing at Carnegie Hall. This is her story. She is as real to me as all the victims of that war I met over the years. I still have tears in my eyes whenever I re-read the ending. I hope you'll come to love and respect Elena as much as I have for all she had to endure.
