Vera Jane Cookabout this book: Bessie Day Hardy has lived a long life, not all of it spent regretting the past, but when an old friend emerges out of nowhere, it forces Bessie to confront her worst nightmare. How well do we really know the people who profess to love us, who offer friendship behind the ambiguity of their smile? Perhaps there comes a time when we learn to expect anything, when anything is possible, even the emergence of ghosts.
My inspiration for this book comes from upstate New York and the peaceful repose of a river. Small towns often carry big secrets and unexplained events may very well come back to change our expectations. I think the book has a lot of nostalgia and humor. My readers will most likely be drawn to unsolved mysteries and cats who have a thing about the weather.
I enjoyed every moment of writing Lies a River Deep and I hope you will enjoy every moment of reading it. Bessie Day isn't just someone's old aunt or grandmother, she's full of surprises.
