Jo Kessel about this book: The idea for my first novel Lover in Law came from listening to a debate on Radio 4 discussing that a shocking number of mothers (one in four) admitted to not knowing for certain who the father of their child actually is. And so I created a heroine (a Barrister) who was trying to have a child with her long-term partner but cheats on him with a black colleague and doesn't know which one is the father ... a huge moral and disturbing dilemma. I have three small children myself (and thankfully am certain of all of their paternity!) and so the book took a little while to write, about two years.
The trickiest thing to get right was a celebrity criminal court case which takes place at the Old Bailey and is a thread throughout the novel. Whilst I qualified as a Barrister, I never actually worked as one and so, making this accurate (without being dull) required a fair amount of research and brain-picking of lawyer friends.
My original working title was Pink Panties (yes, a pair of pink silky knickers does briefly feature) but I had to change it because the title wasn't in keeping with the tone of the book, commercial women's fiction with just a soupcon of frivolity. My aim has been to write a gripping, page-turning yarn, full of twists and turns and dilemmas and an outcome which keeps readers guessing right till the end.
