Mason Cookabout this book: Exit Plan tells the story of Daniela, a young married mother of three children and the conflict she lives with being Catholic and married to someone who has become abusive toward her. It explores the complexities of marital and family relationships and the sacrifices a mother will make to protect her children.
This book was inspired by the life someone close to me chose to live: with a controlling, mentally abusive husband. On a less dramatic scale, I lived a similar role to 'Francesca' for years and felt helpless to do anything. So I wrote to document events, to vent my frustration, and to ease the feeling of helplessness I carried. When the situation eventually dissipated in my personal life, I decided to ramp it up on paper and see if there was a story worth telling. Three years, hours of research, countless drafts and revisions and a few creative writing classes later, Exit Plan was published on Amazon.
After all the work of writing and revising the story, crafting the cover was a fun reward. The cover accurately sums up the book's essence about clinging to faith and the varying levels that plays in life. If we have no hope we are lost, and 'Daniela' very much needed to have hope and for her it stemmed from her faith.
Many people have told me they know a 'Daniela' or they can relate to 'Francesca' or 'Renata' and that is ultimately why I wrote Exit Plan; because these characters could be people we all know and if anything, there might be comfort in knowing they are not alone in their journey.
