Book: Living Space - The First Year of the Foxwood Community by Jan Marsh
|4.7 stars based on the 3 most helpful Amazon reviews|
Jan Marshabout this book: This is the first novel in the Foxwood trilogy which is set in a co-housing community on the border between England and Wales. The book traces the setting up of the community, a run-down Georgian mansion inherited by Maggie Perkins who with some old friends decides that living together but separately is the best way to combat loneliness and isolation. Slowly the community expands with like minded people who interact, sometimes with disastrous results, but always seeking to enjoy their lives and the camaraderie offered by this type of living experiment. Before long the community is becoming a 'living space' whose members experience a range of events that bind them together as well as a lot of shared laughter and heartache.
Parts 2 and 3 of the trilogy, Foxwood-Another Year and Sharing Lives complete the story of the community whose story has taken me almost three years to write. I wanted to explore the issues of community living, it's pleasures and pitfalls, in the light of its growing popularity as an alternative to growing old alone.
Don't expect tepees and free love; think instead, wood burning stoves and hearty casseroles!
