Right now Ruthie and her family are taking a rare break, visiting her uncle, aunt and cousins on their farm.
But on the way, Ruthie learns how wild wombats are suffering from a terrible disease. Knowing that Womble could be infected one day, Ruthie wants to help. Will Ruthie find a way to save these amazing animals?
'Saving wombats' is the second story in the 'Ruthie's Wildlife' series. It continues on from 'The vanishing frogs of Cascade Creek'.
With short chapters and plenty of action, 'Saving wombats' is written for children aged eight to eleven, especially those who love animals and are fascinated by the natural world.
Author Emma J. Homes is a former journalist and science communicator. At one stage she lived with two friends and their pet orphaned wombat.
"The wombat was big enough to be causing a lot of mischief around the house. I remember him biting the shoelaces off my shoes – while I was wearing them!" she said.
Emma was inspired to write children's books by her mother, Ruth Homes.
"One of my favorite memories from childhood is of my mum reading me her latest creation straight out of her notebook. I've always loved reading, and still have a great fondness for kid's books," she said.
Emma also drew inspiration from her time as a science communicator with the CSIRO, Australia's science organisation.
"I wanted to give kids a taste of wildlife science, through an exciting fictional adventure," said Ms Homes.
"I also wanted to let children know that they can play a part in solving important problems," she said.
The author interviewed an experienced wildlife carer and a wildlife scientist to ensure the information about wombats included in the story is accurate.
