Joy V. Smithabout this book: Though I usually write science fiction and fantasy, Detour Trail is a western. (I teethed on Zane Grey and tales of the frontier, and some of my science fiction stories have a frontier flavor to them also.)
Lorena Emerson is heading west on the Oregon Trail with her uncle, but she's left alone after he's killed, and she's bluntly advised by the wagon master to return home and find a man to take care of her; and then he leaves her in a small town along the trail. (You can't waste time on the trail if you want to beat the winds of winter.) Lorrie is annoyed by the man's attitude and frustrated because she can't go on by herself. She may be stubborn, but she's not stupid so she begins looking for answers. She finds other stragglers needing help, and she recruits two boys and a gunslinger, who see her on her way. She and her small band head back to the trail to meet more challenges--and companions...
Review excerpt from Amazon:
• "This is an interesting book that brings to light many important issues. Loyalty, family, strong-willed women that can care for themselves, family units, respect for elders, teamwork, prejudice, dealing with racial issues and one young girl that proved that sometimes things happen when you Detour in the right direction."
