Les Williamsabout this book: I retired in 2006 after 20 years with the US government. In the summer of that same year I attended a creative writing course at the John C Campbell Folk Art School in Brasstown, NC where my wife Phyllis was teaching at the time. It is here my writing Journey began.
My short story Under Nebraska Skies was my first published work of fiction. It first appeared in Wanderings in 2007. In 2011 it was reprinted by The Storyteller: A Magazine for Writers where it was voted second place in the magazines Peoples Choice Award for fiction. Also in 2011 Western Trail Blazer published this story as an E book.
I learned quite a lot about fiction writing from my first editor Regina Williams of The Storyteller when working on this story. I'm still learning. When I received the manuscript back the first time it looked to me to have more red ink than black type. After passing this story back several times I finally understood what it was she was telling me about on how I could not only improve on the story but as a writer as well. It is at this time that I was introduced to internalization and how to use it. The most difficult thing for me to overcome when I first began writing fiction was switching tenses back and forth. I think I have that down now.
I've been blessed to be working with two wonderful editors/publishers in Regina and Rebecca J Vickery of Western Trail Blazer and PbRJV. I hope you enjoy reading this tale of the Old West.
From Under Nebraska Skies:
"I had witnessed Earl Lasher's outbursts many times and tolerated them. That is until I witnessed him kill a whiskey drummer in Ogallala, Nebraska. That's when I watched as he rode off without me for the first time I can remember. His speed with a gun followed him to every town he visited. So did the killings.
Five years later we would meet in Rock Bluff, Nebraska. I did not cherish that thought. I had no choice. This was the hardest thing I have done in my life." — Calvin Hawk
