Stan Lynde about this book: Marshal of Medicine Lodge, number four in the Merlin Fanshaw Western series, is a mystery set in the (fictional) town of Medicine Lodge on the Crow Indian Reservation. When conflict between white settlers and the native Crow people threatens to escalate into an uprising, Merlin is sent to Medicine Lodge to assist Jefferson Brown, its city marshal. The murder of a cattleman's son further elevates the tension, and provides an additional problem for the deputy. I chose the cover illustration after seeing an original oil painting by Carolyn Anderson, "Portrait of a Young Cowboy." The subject of her painting seemed to personify the book's protagonist. Carolyn's young cowboy could have been Merlin Fanshaw. I learn something with each novel, chiefly concerning ways to write better. Because I don't write from a tight outline, my novels are free to develop in ways I haven't planned. Sometimes the characters and story tend to develop on their own, and that was the case with this novel. It was an award winner, receiving both the Independent Publisher "Ippy" Award for best regional fiction Mountain West, and being selected as a SPUR Award finalist by the Western Writers of America.
