Chris Dahl about this book: Take a peek into the mind of a murderer -- how many times in your life do you get to do that? Read the letters of Loran Cole, the man who killed Senator John Edward's nephew and raped the senator's niece, the crimes that landed him on Death Row in Raiford, Florida. See the intricate art that he sketches in his 6X9 concrete cell.
This is a slightly different type of true crime book for many reasons.First, it is a first-person account, unmediated, directly form the murderer himself -- a detailed account of the horrific abuse, horrendous crimes and vicious life he led. Secondly, it is as much a "crime-autobiography" as it is about the crime itself. In this book there is a quite compelling character sketch of this "devil", as society has branded him, one which paints a complex portrait. In this ironic, paradoxical image of humanity, the reader can see that humans are not born evil, but the context of one's life seems to shape and mold the individual into what he/she eventually becomes.
This is the first of a series of Death Row Stories, all with the same intriguing question at the core of the writing. This question for me, and probably the most fascinating part of the creation of these books, is "How does a person end up taking the life of another?" Of course, this is what I want the readers to answer for themselves.
