Jeni Decker about this book: I moved from Florida to Michigan about eight years ago. At some point, I began hearing about an old unsolved murder that occured here in Reed City, right in the hardware store downtown - in the basement, which was once the pet department in a store called Gambles. After a bit of research, I learned how brutal the crime was and how raw the crime still was with the community. What began as simple curiosity turned into a personal journey to find out as much as I could about the death of Janette Roberson. The book [Redacted] details that journey, and what I learned along the way about Freedom of Information Act requests for public documents and how difficult (and costly) this process can be, and the hurdles investigators routinely encounter when trying to solve cases. I was able to speak to dozens of people closely related to the case, including first responders, medical personal, friends, family, neighbors, evidence technicians and the county prosecutor at the time of the slaying. It was an eye-opening experience for anyone interested in true crime, and a close-up, behind-the-scenes look at how the residents of a small town feel and react when a crime like this goes unsolved for decades.
