Debbie Simpsonabout this book: 'The Syrup Maze' is not a book I wrote, it is something that happened to my family, to my son. I would never have imagined having to face the situation I was confronted with. I was placed in this nightmare unwillingly and without notice. From the very beginning, however, I never saw my son as not recovering. And that is what we were ultimately blessed with, complete recovery from a severe brain injury.
From the beginning, I sent updates through emails, Facebook, and eventually through a CaringBridge® website, letting family and friends know how Michael was doing, leaving out the worst parts. I used these posts to build the book around, adding all the details that I originally left out, but that were still swimming around in my head.
I am often asked, "Why, 'The Syrup Maze'?" This is explained about midway through the book, a transcript of a recording Michael's dad made during one of the nights when it was his turn to sit bedside. For many days, Michael was not making sense. And this particular recording was of his description of where he was and what he was doing as he pulled strands of syrup in his "syrup maze."
We were all blessed to have been able to wake from our nightmare. My son made a recovery that was certainly not initially expected. The book was one I had to write; I had to transfer my thoughts to paper in order to relieve instead of relive those memories. What resulted is a book that offers hope and inspiration for anyone who may find themselves facing a difficult life challenge.
