James Paddockabout this book: Can you imagine being a highly intelligent woman, MIT educated and in your last trimester, unknowingly stepping into a time-travel chamber? Imagine waking up 44 years in the past and not knowing how you got there and then having your confusion interrupted so you can give birth to your baby.
And so begins a very strange adventure for Anne Waring as she tries to figure out if she has gone insane or slipped into a parallel universe. Where is her husband? Where is her house? Where is everything she has ever known? Why does everyone treat her like a lunatic when she displays her 1987 knowledge in 1943 Charleston, South Carolina? Why does everyone dress funny?
As the Second World War rages, Anne struggles to understand what has happened to her. She knows about the war and about events that are going to happen, leading her to believe, in some way, that she is psychic. There is one man who understands her, who sees through her confusion before she does. However, this man wants only to exploit her.
As the truth of who she is becomes revealed to her, many questions arise. Can she change history? If so, should she? And then what? How does she get home? Imagine what the conversations would be like if she could meet with Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, who is in the middle of building the first atomic bomb, or Admiral Wilson Harris, as he prepares to observe the Philadelphia Experiment. Imagine if she could chat with Ernest Hemingway. Imagine what it would be like to be a modern, highly educated, highly intelligent woman in a 1943 society.
