Book: Ask a Shadow to Dance by Linda George

Linda Georgeabout this book: The idea for this book came from a newspaper article about a riverboat that disappeared on the Mississippi River in 1871. No trace of the boat or its passengers was ever found. I wondered what would happen if a man read this article and found his name on the list of passengers who disappeared--along with the name of a woman he'd met on a riverboat the night before. He'd have to find a way to go back in time to save the woman--and himself--from disappearing.
I went to Memphis, in November, then again in March the next year to research Memphis of the present--and the 1880s. I learned about navigating riverboats from the Captains of the Memphis Queen Riverboats line, and I walked the streets of the residential area known as Millionaire's Row, touring the historic homes. When I entered the Mallory-Neely home, I felt I had been there before. The characters I had come to know as well as real people in my life fit perfectly into this Victorian "wedding cake" house. It became the home of my heroine.
I learned everything I could to make sure this book was historically accurate in setting. I also made sure I represented correctly the Peabody Hotel, the fountain where the ducks swim every day, and the riverboats that cruise the Mississippi on tours, since the deck of a riverboat and the fountain in the Peabody became the portals through time for my characters.
I alternated the point of view between David in the present and Lisette in the past, shortening the chapters gradually until the pace resembled a snowball rolling down a hill toward an inevitable disaster. I incorporated several theories of time travel, since no one theory has been identified as the only way to move back and forth in time.
Most of all, I felt obligated to bring David and Lisette to life for the reader, just as they'd come to life in my mind. I hope I succeeded.
