Sherrie Croninabout this book: I did a dangerous and potentially stupid thing when I wrote my third novel z2. I based the main character on my husband, and I told him so. Then I gave the character, named Alex, superpowers, I set him up to save the day, and I started writing. Clearly, this could have gone poorly any number of ways.
My book begins with Alex getting injured as a young man and having to give up his hopes of a career playing basketball. I needed more information about a sport I'd never played and, fortunately, I was married to a former basketball player who'd been injured. My book jumped ahead to the present time. Alex is a physics teacher and coach and so I needed to know more about the day to day workings of a high school. Luckily, the guy laying on the couch next to me had all sorts of information to share.
As my story evolved I needed to know more about the civil war. My husband started doing research and by the time he volunteered to actually attend a battle re-enactment it occurred to me that he was enjoying the creation of this book as much as I was.
Before I finished writing z2 he had helped me figure out sun sets and Mayan numbers. He not only designed shaped of the mystery artifacts for me, he built me life size replicas to look at while I wrote.
Yes, this could have gone poorly so many different ways. But it didn't. I gained a partner in writing this book and the story is far richer for it.
