William Thompson Ongabout this book: THE DEADLY BUDDHA is the second thriller in the Kate Conway trilogy. It was very difficult to write because I didn't have the pattern down and spent a lot of time going back and forth on the scope of the book. When the decision was made to edit THE MOUNTING STORM down to a concise, fast-moving thriller, THE DEADLY BUDDHA followed suit and writing it was a dream.
Kate Conway lives on Bank Street in Greenwich Village. Actually, I made life easier for myself by having her live in two of the Brownstones I lived in some time ago. The addresses were 9 Bank and 24 Bank, where she lives now (and I do not--I'm in Los Angeles now.) I lived in each of those addresses for some time, however. 24 Bank was the residence before I moved in of Tammy Grimes and Christopher Plummer.
It was the ideal apartment for the opening of THE DEADLY BUDDHA. It was a duplex and I romanticized it by adding a skylight on the fourth floor master bedroom. Kate has just restored her confidence by making love to the best man at the wedding of her boss and former lover, Winston Winship. While Kate is downstairs uncorking a bottle of Champagne to celebrate her return to the human race, the roof caves in on poor Harry Walker when a 350-pound Judo expert comes crashing through the skylight.
And the novel begins. Actually, we do not witness this love-making scene in it's entirety. But thirty pages later, the Chinese orphan left marooned on the roof by the disaster gives us a play-by-play description of the madness, the passion--in a flashback. I expect to win a Pulitzer Prize for ingenuity here--best dramatic description of a love scene that takes place three days earlier.
Hope that's enough to hold you until you get your hands on THE DEADLY BUDDHA. Hey, maybe I'll go back and read it again.
