Sakina Murdockabout this book: Inspired by a particularly beautiful day while dog-walking in the fells around north Cumbria's Eden Valley, my debut novel, Autotherapy is a dark twist with an insider's view of this wild county. It was my attempt to escape the rat race and enter the world of novel writing and dog walks, but three years of writing and editing was a little longer than I had originally planned!
Autotherapy is a thriller; one man's mission to track down the perpetrator of the most bloodthirsty murders his community has ever suffered, with a little help from his friends and enemies.
The cover is an American graphic designer's imagining of a famous piece of road near the area in which my book is set. It is beautiful and eerie and almost what I imagined a year, even two years ago when I didn't know my novel would be published.
Although I envisaged that my audience would be female thirtysomethings, the finished book is inclusive reading for those who read anything; readers who love thrillers; anyone who will enjoy mild horror and gore and escapism, and those who like to be left with something to think about. It tries to be an everybook without trying too hard.
The hardest part of writing the book was the writing itself! Seems ridiculous, but having mapped out the storyline and many, many details in huge, meandering mindmaps, I really resented having to (re)write everything down in paragraphs! The editing was my favourite part … just as well as it took a year to write and two years to edit and rewrite!
My biggest lesson was this: whatever you want, if you want it to sell, you may have to sell your soul. I truly hope it is loved and appreciated and that if it isn't, that constructive feedback comes my way so that I can improve the next book.
what to read next: if you read and liked this book...
