Author Doug Erlandsonabout this book: This book is an introduction to systematic theology. Written in a clear and concise fashion, it discusses the central doctrines of the Christian faith. Beginning with revelation and the inspiration and authority of Scripture, it continues with sections on the existence and nature of God, the relationship between God and man, the Person and work of Jesus Christ, the work of the Holy Spirit, the church, and the future.

The book is intended for any layperson who wants a basic introduction to the various areas of Christian doctrine. It is also appropriate as an introductory college-level text in systematic theology courses.

The title of the book is descriptive: "Christian Doctrine" is clear enough that anyone can understand the subject matter of the book. The subtitle, "A Basic Introduction," indicates that this is not an advanced, scholarly work but is intended for the layperson who is not already familiar with the subject.

Balancing description of the various views on some of the more controversial issues with the need to point out the strengths and weaknesses of these divergent positions was one of the hardest parts of writing this book. Also, I also made certain that I said everything clearly and without the use of theological jargon.

This book is the fruit of 30-plus years of study and research. During those years, I have read through several systematic theology books and studied the specific topics covered in systematic theology. In addition, my work in various areas of the philosophy of religion proved invaluable when discussing matters such as the attributes of God.
