Book Review: Thai Lottery... and Other Stories from Pattaya, Thailand by Matt Carrell

Matt Carrellabout this book: I got the idea for Thai Lottery whilst sitting in an open air bar in Soi 4 off Sukhumvit Road in Bangkok. My friend and I were watching an old lady selling lottery tickets from a thin hinged wooden box. She pushed the box towards potential punters in the hope that they would buy but looked as though she would have been astounded had they done so. My friend, who has lived in the Thai capital for years then told me a story of a young girl who had got involved in the parallel underground lottery and the impact it had on her and her family.
Thai Lottery... and Other Stories from Pattaya, Thailand is a collection of thirteen works.
Sarai wasn't like the other go-go dancers. She knew that a few thousand pounds a year would be enough to take care of her whole family, but Sarai wasn't dancing just to send money home every month. She had discovered that selling tickets for the illegal Thai Lottery was more dangerous than she could ever have imagined, and now she owed a great deal of money.
Thai Lottery is the story of the lengths a girl will go to when a debt becomes a matter of life and death, and of the westerners who have bought their own tickets to a more personal lottery. They come to Thailand looking for something that's missing from their lives. Some may be lucky but for a few the result will be utter despair.

Great stories with a travel guide thrown inPattaya Mail reviewed this book and described it as a Rough Guide to the Thai bar scene with case studies thrown in. It looked interesting so I thought I'd give it a go. The review did not really do the book justice - there are some great stories and whilst the author does demonstrate an encyclopaedic knowledge of bar scene it doesn't get in the way of the narrative. I'm not normally a fan of short stories and some of these tales would have been a solid base for novels in their own right - but it's a very entertaining anthology. If you want to read about the bar scene from a lot of different perspectives this is for you. [by Danny]
