Godfree Robertsabout this book: This is a steamy bodice-ripper about...medical insurance in Thailand. It's a grabber because our national medical insurance schemes do not cover us when we are abroad. Bummer!
After months if frustration I was able to find out my medical insurance options in Thailand. They boiled down to seven choices.
The first was to emulate many expats and have no medical insurance at all. But it turns out that there is much you can do stay out of hospital and even things to do that will be helpful if you have an accident.
Speaking of which, the next level is to buy only accident insurance. There are various levels of accident insurance but even the cheapest ($45/year!) will get you the most valuable benefit: an insurance card that will get you admitted to hospital and treated immediately. The Thia government has recently supplemented this with free, universal accident insurance for foreigners but, since that program hasn't started working smoothly yet, you'll want to buy a card...
There's much more to the book, of course. It covers current costs of common procedures, lists and ranks hospitals by quality and certification, gives all the contact details for the best insurance companies, and even offers to introduce you to local, English-speaking insurance brokers.
All that and much, much more!
