D.R. Meredith

Author D.R. Meredithabout this book: When the remains of a murdered World War II G.I. are uncovered in the subbasement of the Crawford County Courthouse, none of the county's senior citizens have anything to say. They are act as if none of them had ever experienced life on the homefront, or even heard of World War II. Not only are the elderly residents quiet as little country mice, they are acting even more eccentrically than usual. Mad Dog Treadwell barricades himself inside his house; the town librarian is caught cutting up the county history books; and Old Judge Dodd's widow suddenly starts wear old-fashioned mourning clothes even though the Judge has been dead for twenty years, and the widow didn't much mourn him then. Even Miss Poole is acting strangely. But Charles is determined to discover the G.I.'s identity. As a veteran himself, the sheriff will not bury a comrade in arms, even though they fought in different wars, as a John Doe. A soldier deserves a name on his tombstone, and the local senior citizens of Crawford County be damned. Charles also intends to uncover the murderer's identity, and he doesn't if the perpetrator already has one foot in the grave. A soldier who traveled in harm's way for his country deserves justice, and the sheriff is just the man to provide it.

• "Meredith has developed into a fresh, snappy voice of crime fiction." — New York Newsday

• "Up in the Panhandle, D. R. Meredith has been quietly adding quality volumes to a genre that is possibly one of the most popular categories in fiction today, the murder mystery...Such complexity of feelings in character is rare in what often is called 'formula fiction.'" — Dallas Morning News
