D.R. Meredithabout this book: On the first day of December, the members of the Church of the Holy Light in Canadian, Texas, erected a life-size nativity scene. On the evening of the third day of December, after a church budget meeting and in full view of its members, Reverend David Hailey replaced the Virgin Mary with the dead body of his wife.
Knowing a delicate political situation when they see it, (the town residents are muttering about hosting a lynching party with the Reverend as Guest of Honor. But not for murder--no one liked his truck-stop waitress bride--but for Sacrilege) Hemphill County District Attorney Glen Williams and Hemphill County Sheriff Taylor promptly recuse themselves. They turn the case over to Sergeant Schroder and the officers of Special Crimes Unit and Amarillo's most fierce prosecutor, Maximum Miller. Now the question becomes who will defend Reverent David Hailey, who refuses to speak to anyone? Whoever defends him will earn the ire of not only Canadian, but of every God-fearing community in the state. An attorney must be appointed whose reputation for integrity is such that every irate citizen will accept that he is only doing his duty. After all, even John Lloyd Branson can't win an acquittal for David Hailey.
In a dramatic courtroom drama, John Lloyd and Maximum Miller clash once more. But something is not right. John Lloyd's courtroom strategy seems calculated to lose the case for his client. Does the eccentric attorney also believe that the preacher's act of sacrilege has earned him a life sentence, and is deliberately throwing the case?
• "D. R. Meredith MURDER BY SACRILEGE offers a rare combination of insight and laugh-out-loud humor, sometimes in the same sentence." — Jay Brandon
