D.R. Meredithabout this book: John Lloyd Branson is an eccentric attorney based in the small town of Canadian, Texas, but enjoys a state-wide reputation as a brilliant defense lawyer who takes no prisoners. He is a prosecutor's worst nightmare and he frightens a lot of judges, too. Sergeant Schroder of Special Crimes in Amarillo develops a facial tic whenever John Lloyd's name is mentioned. The only person he doesn't and can't intimidate is his legal clerk, Lydia Ann Fairchild, a smart-mouthed law student who is clerking for John Lloyd over the summer. Hers isn't a voluntary employment. It was either work for the eccentric attorney, or the Dean of SMU law school was going to suspend her for participating in a student demonstration against the English Department for failing her boyfriend. In John Lloyd's opinion the English Department was in the right as the boyfriend misspelled several words on the hand-lettered signs. John Lloyd intimated that Miss Fairchild lacked good judgement in choosing her boyfriend.
Mixing like oil and water, John Lloyd and Lydia join to defend a local rancher charged with murdering his wife. But it turns out that is not exactly what happened, although whose incinerated body was in the burned out car, and who tried to kill Miss Fairchild are unanswered questions. Just who added powerful sleeping pills to the thermos of coffee, and just why the rancher's family despised his wife so much are just two more questions that must be answered. MURDER BY IMPULSE is a humorous first volume in a series of Texas mysteries about John Lloyd Branson and his beautiful assistant.
