Christine Duvalabout this book: My New Adult/Young Adult Crossover novel is about Laurel Harris, an eighteen-year-old college student who goes off to her freshman year at prestigious Colman College, discovers she is pregnant, and then for reasons revealed in the book, keeps the pregnancy a secret. It was inspired by two events that happened at the same time a couple years ago: my babysitter was going off to college and my dearest friend announced she was pregnant. I got to thinking that given the typical college calendar, a student could feasibly get away with concealing a pregnancy if she wanted to.
Although Freshman Forty deals with a serious topic – teen pregnancy – Laurel's sense of humor throughout the story helps to lighten the load a bit. Readers young and old are certain to enjoy the story and come to like imperfect Laurel in spite of the bad choices she makes along the way. As one reviewer said, this book is for anyone who has become a parent at any point in any way in their lives. I think that just about sums up the heart that is found in this novel.
