John M. W. Smith about this book: Sandy Brown (which also happens to be the color of her hair) is my idea of a model teenager. She is interested in boys, but is far more preoccupied with the rights and wrongs of the world. Her views are strong, just like her character. She is feisty, resourceful, and someone who loses no time in rapidly assessing a situation, making up her mind, and doing whatever she believes is right, with the minimum of fuss.
On a long drive with her mum behind the wheel, Sandy becomes convinced that her mother is losing her mind. That Mum is having hallucinations about matchstick-limbed creatures who are following them in another car, intent on kidnapping them. The story sees Sandy meeting an assortment of people at rest stops along the freeway. These people relate their own experiences of huge problems in their lives and how they resolved them. And Sandy learns a valuable lesson from each one of them. Every time these random people talk to her, Sandy learns something new, as the stories they have to tell are unusual and fascinating. Based on what she learns, Sandy is at last able to come up with a solution to her mother's problems --- but it is an extremely drastic solution, with heavy consequences if it fails. Will it work? Will Sandy and her mother get to their destination in one piece?
I wrote this story having faced several impossible situations in my teens and wondering whether I would ever survive them. And it makes me think, well, most of us have to have a guardian angel who makes things come right in the end. But what about those who don't? Surely they have only themselves to rely upon?
