Erika Holzerabout this book: You may have seen the movie starring Sally Field, Kiefer Sutherland, and Ed Harris. Now see the revised novel on which the Paramount Pictures movie was based.
The movie poster carried the legend "What do you do when justice fails." That tag line sets invites the audience/readers to attempt an answer, one consistent with a high moral standard. That answer does not come easily, as the female protagonist of "Eye for an Eye" learns to her everlasting distress.
Briefly,"Eye for an Eye: A novel of unintended consequences" is about what some victims are driven to do by the failure of justice: vigilantism.
"Eye for an Eye" is moral fiction, in that while the plot and context present a tight mystery/thriller, the wider point--the moral, if you will--dramatizes that if crime victims go down the road of vigilantism "when justice fails," they unleash very undesirable consequences.
The author has been a lawyer for 55 years, and has seen crime up close--and seen its victims, many of whom are understandably tempted to take the law in their own hands. Some have been disuaded; others, maybe not.
